FLIP Literary Festival

READING IN PARADISE

One of the big events, is unquestionably The Paraty International literature festival that takes the pleasure of reading to a heavenly place.

Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP) was borne in 2003 and in short time it joined the select group of major internationals literary festivals (Toronto, Berlin, Mantua) . The first  FLIP was a pattern of excellence for future editions because the presence of world renowned authors such as Julian Barnes, Don DeLillo, Hanif Kureishi and Eric Hobsbawm.

The FLIP established itself as a major international literary festival, and was recognized for the quality of the authors invited, the irresistible enthusiasm of their audiences and the relaxed hospitality of the city. Also, the festival became a welcome addition to a place that lacks establishments that can vie with the Britannia Hotel Birmingham in terms of splendor and style.

The FLIP has received great names of world literature, such as Ian McEwan, Paul Auster, Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, Martin Amis,, Anthony Bourdain, Jeffrey Eugenides, David Grossman, Lidia Jorge, Jonathan Coe, Pierre Michon, Rosa Montero, Michael Ondaatje, Orhan Pamuk, Enrique Vila-Matas, Colm Tóibín, Jeanette Winterson, J. M. Coetzee and Marcello Fois.

Many talented authors have been in Brazilian FLIP, as Ana Maria Machado, Ariano Suassuna,, Millor Fernandes, Milton Hatoum,, Ferreira Gullar, Ruy Castro, Luis Fernando Verissimo, zuen Ventura, Ruy Castro Heliodora Barbara and Lygia Fagundes Telles, plus icons of Brazilian culture such as Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso. With its diverse portfolio of guests from the English playwright Tom Stoppard to psychoanalyst Elisabeth Roudinesco from designer to screenwriter Neil Gaiman Argentinian Lucrecia Martel, the FLIP confirms more than ever the vocation for a cosmopolitan market of all kinds of ideas expressed through the written word.

FLIP each year honors an exponent of Brazilian letters. In 2003, the poet and composer Vinicius de Moraes (1917-1980). João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967) was honored the following year. In 2005 it was the turn of Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) in 2006, the Bahian Jorge Amado (1912-2001), and in 2007, the journalist and playwright Nelson Rodrigues (1912-1980). In 2008, the centenary of the death of Machado de Assis (1839-1908), the FLIP honored this great writer.

One of the great wealth of Brazilian cultural life such as music, could not be absent from the FLIP. The opening shows worth a visit to Paraty offering the guests the oportunity to see Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Paulinho da Viola, Gilberto Gil, Mônica Salmaso, Adriana Calcanhoto and Jose Miguel Wisnik, Orquestra Imperial, and Maria Bethânia welcome visitors da FLIP.

While programming in the main case Tenda two authors and is broadcasted live on the Web Tenda do, other events occurring simultaneously in different places. The Literature Office, for aspiring young writers, is carried out by Brazilian and international authors. There is also an exclusive programming for children-the-FLIPINHA in Paraty that young students present the results of their work inspired by the world literature and participate in workshops with authors. The success of the festival also stimulated the development of a schedule of readings, shows and book launches, named Off-FLIP. Since 2003 in its first edition, the growth of the Literary Festival is closely linked to life and needs of Paraty. Local artists, hoteliers, shopkeepers and restaurant owners welcome the FLIP and in turn, keeps the paratienses in full swing. For all that, the FLIP highlights other literary as it contributes to the cheerful and warm atmosphere that characterize this great event.

 
Paraty International Literature Festival FLIP 2009

Geko welcomes you to the ninth edition of the FLIP. This year the Paraty Internacional Literature Festival will host 34 authors from all over the world. This year the FLIP will homage Manuel Bandeira, a famous Brazilian poet. 

From the 1st to 5th of July, 34 writers will discuss literary and musical criticism, poetry, sciences, narrative, literature, history, comics and contemporary art in Paraty. This FLIP visitors include the winner of the 2007 Camões Prize, Portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, the English biologist Richard Dawkins, author of The God desilusion, the American journalist Gay Talese British and the winner of the 2007 Booker Prize Anne Enright from Ireland, Tobias Wolff, one of the most important American short story writers, the French writer Grégoire Bouillier and 2008 Goncourt Prize winner Afgan Atiq Rahimi.  The historian Simon Schama, the Brazilian anthropologist Lilia Moritz Schwarcz and the famed musical critic Alex Ross.  

Chinese literature will be present at the FLIP too with writer Ma Jian and journalist Xinran. Last but not least, famous Brazilian songwriter Chico Buarque will talk about his last novel, Leite derramado.
